My name is Neil Barron. I am 29 years old and I have Cerebral Palsy.
I am seeking financial aid in order to have adult stem cell treatments, so that I may someday stand, walk, and drive a car. In short, I want to live a more productive life.
“Cerebral Palsy” is a serious motor disorder caused by damage or trauma to the brain before, during or after birth. “Cerebral” refers to the two hemispheres, or halves of the brain. “Palsy” describes any disorder that impairs control of body movements. The difficulties of a child with CP are not caused by problems of muscle nerves. Depending on which areas of the brain have been damaged, patients with CP suffer from different disabilities. My disabilities include tightness plus spastic muscles, involuntary movement, impairment in vision and speech, bladder and bowel control, and contracted muscles in the back of both knees.
Each year in the United States about 8,000 children are diagnosed with CP. I was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy when I was two years old. The left side of my body is weaker, and I have trouble with balance. My left eye is lazy. My vision with glasses is 20/30 right eye, 20/40 left eye. I have “Mixed Cerebral Palsy” and have been confined to my wheelchair all my life. I am “Quadriplegic.” I have limited use of my left hand and leg due to weakness, plus limited extension of my left arm. I have full use of my hand and it is strong with full extension of my right arm. Contracted muscles in the back of both knees and spastic muscle tone in both legs prevent extending and stretching both legs. I can’t stand without my entire body shaking and collapsing to the ground due to muscle weakness.
“Paraplegia” or full body involvement is also used to describe my case because my head and neck are also affected. Adult stem cells taken from bone marrow and umbilical cord stem cells have the ability to generate into different types of tissues. Facilities in Germany and other parts of the world have shown improvements by injecting stem cells in the spinal cord of a CP patient. The CP patients of this treatment have had significant improvements.
Stem cell treatment is my best option, maybe my only option, to attain a better quality of life. I desperately need help before it is too late for me. My only caregiver is my 84 year old grandmother and a friend who teaches at www.cv.edu where I received my Associate of Arts degree at Chattahoochee Valley Community College in Alabama majoring in psychology. I would like to go on to attain both Bachelors and Masters Degrees in that field. My long-term goal is to work in traditional and alternative medicines.
If I am able to get enough financial backing for treatment, I would receive two rounds of treatment and would have to wait about one year between rounds. So, we would have to rent an apartment in order to spend the time needed. I am trying to raise $109,000 USD to cover all expenses of this “Quality of Life” regenerative treatment.
My condition has given me insight into the human condition, but it has also physically isolated me from other people and life experiences.
Please help me remove my physical barriers so that I may live a fuller life, both for myself and others.
